ALDI Ireland has announced a new €1.2 million partnership with Arigna Fuels, a family-run business based in Arigna, Co. Roscommon, to supply its Harvest Flame product nationwide. The deal marks a significant step in ALDI’s commitment to sustainability and support for Irish suppliers.
Starting Thursday, August 21, Harvest Flame (a low-emission, renewable heating product) will be stocked in all 164 ALDI stores nationwide. Made in Ireland, the product is crafted from 100% renewable organic materials, specifically olive stones, a by-product of olive oil production.
This innovative fuel is designed for use in stoves, open fires, and outdoor fire pits, offering consumers a more sustainable alternative to traditional solid fuels. Since olive trees are harvested annually without the need for felling, the process supports both environmental sustainability and efficient resource use.
As part of its investment in Europe’s largest biochar production facility, Arigna Fuels is contributing to an emerging climate solution. Biochar, a stable form of carbon produced from organic waste at high temperatures, can lock carbon into the soil for centuries. This not only supports soil health but also acts as a carbon sink, helping to offset emissions from other sources. The integration of biochar into their fuel production chain reflects a forward-looking approach to carbon management.
Unlike peat or coal-based briquettes, which contribute to air pollution and carbon emissions, renewable solid fuels like Harvest Flame burn cleaner and produce significantly fewer particulates. This can help reduce harmful emissions in domestic heating, which remains a major source of air quality issues in Ireland. For households without access to electric or gas heating, products like these provide a realistic path to cleaner energy use without large infrastructure changes.
Arigna Fuels, which currently employs 45 people, recently invested in Europe’s largest biochar production facility, located in Co. Roscommon. This facility plays a key role in supporting the production of Harvest Flame and reflects the company’s growing commitment to renewable energy solutions.
The collaboration builds on an existing relationship between ALDI and Arigna Fuels, where the product had previously been available as a Specialbuy. This new deal secures wider and ongoing availability of Harvest Flame across the country.
Barry Kirwan, Buying Director at ALDI Ireland, said that the retailer was excited to partner with Arigna through this €1.2 million initiative, which reflects their ongoing dedication to sustainability and supporting local Irish suppliers:
“At ALDI, we are committed to making sustainability affordable for our customers, so shoppers can feel confident they are making responsible, sustainable choices when they shop with us.”
Conor Layden, Commercial Director of Arigna Group, added:
“This partnership represents a strategic advancement in our commercial expansion and reinforces our commitment to delivering renewable, low-emission heating solutions. Harvest Flame is engineered for efficiency and sustainability, offering a reliable alternative to traditional solid fuels while supporting Ireland’s transition to a low-carbon economy.”
This partnership underscores ALDI’s continued focus on providing sustainable, high-quality alternatives while supporting Irish producers. It aligns with national efforts to reduce emissions and promote renewable energy sources, offering consumers an accessible way to contribute to a low-carbon future.
