Green Spot, one of Ireland’s most iconic whiskey brands, is celebrating a century of whiskey heritage with the release of a 100 Year Anniversary Limited Edition 10-Year-Old expression. This special release honours the brand’s origins and long-standing traditions while introducing a modern tribute to its historical identity.

A Century of Craft: The Origins of Green Spot

Green Spot was first introduced in 1925 by Mitchell & Son, a family-owned wine and spirits merchant in Dublin. The Mitchells sourced whiskey by sending their own fortified wine casks, previously used for sherry, port, and wine, to be filled at the Jameson Distillery. These casks were returned to the Mitchells’ cellars, where the whiskey matured under their care.

To track the aging process, each cask was marked with a coloured paint spot. The green spot, indicating a 10-year-old whiskey, would go on to give the brand its enduring name. This practical marking system would eventually become a distinctive symbol of quality and age, central to the Green Spot identity.

The 100 Year Anniversary Limited Edition

This centenary release pays homage to that original 10-year-old expression. Crafted at Midleton Distillery in Cork and bottled at 46% ABV, the anniversary whiskey offers a deeper, more complex flavour profile that reflects a century of tradition and craftsmanship.

Tasting Profile

According to Spot Whiskey, the whiskey opens with floral honey, toffee, and autumnal fruit notes, followed by warming layers of spice, vanilla, and dried fruits. The finish delivers a rich and lingering balance of orchard fruits and pot still character, a hallmark of the Green Spot range.

A Bold New Look with a Nod to the Past

To commemorate the occasion, Green Spot has partnered with branding agency WMH&I to redesign the bottle, which features a vibrant reinterpretation of the iconic green daub. Once a simple cask mark, the daub now appears as sweeping green brushstrokes accented with gold, symbolising the fusion of tradition and contemporary design.

In a further celebration of the colour that defines its identity, Spot Whiskey collaborated with sustainable paint brand YesColours to create a bespoke Green Spot paint shade. This limited-edition paint draws on YesColours’ expertise in colour science and sustainability to bring Green Spot’s visual heritage into a new medium.

“Our green daub has always been more than a symbol. It’s a mark of trust, craftsmanship and the care that goes into every drop of our Green Spot expression,” said David McCabe, Chief Blender at Irish Distillers.

“We wanted to honour our heritage by creating a bespoke liquid that reflects the depth of the original Green Spot cask, while showcasing how far the brand has come.”

John Stubbs, CEO of YesColours, added:

“It was important for us to honour and bring to life the mood-enhancing colour of Spot Whiskey’s iconic green daub, while bringing a fresh perspective to the paint shade.”

A Nod to Sustainability in Modern Whiskey Branding

While Green Spot’s sustainability claims are subtle in this release, its partnership with YesColours, a paint brand known for eco-conscious production, suggests a broader movement in Irish whiskey toward sustainability.

YesColours’ emphasis on water-based, low-VOC paints and recyclable packaging aligns with growing environmental expectations for premium brands. In pairing with such a partner, Green Spot not only honours its aesthetic legacy but also demonstrates an awareness of environmental responsibility, even in non-liquid elements of the product experience.

This reflects a larger shift across the spirits industry, where packaging, sourcing, and collaboration choices increasingly signal brand values.

Availability and Collector’s Opportunity

The Green Spot 100 Year Anniversary Limited Edition 10-Year-Old is now available in Ireland (ROI and NI), the UK, and through Global Travel Retail. In Ireland, the bottle can be purchased via Mitchell and Son Wine Merchants. A special offer is available for the first 100 in-store customers at The Vaults location in Dublin, who will receive a complimentary sample of the Green Spot 1L paint.

Conclusion

The Green Spot 100 Year Anniversary release is a celebration of legacy, innovation, and craftsmanship. With its return to a 10-year-old age statement, a bold new design, and a creative colour collaboration, the release brings Green Spot full circle, honouring its roots while embracing the future. It offers whiskey enthusiasts a rare chance to own and taste a piece of Irish whiskey history, reimagined for a new century.
