On 31st August, people across Ireland will have the rare opportunity to explore some of the country’s most nature-friendly farms as part of Inside the Gate, a free, one-day national event organised by Farming For Nature.
Inside the Gate is a unique initiative aimed at connecting the public with real working farms that are leading the way in sustainable, nature-friendly agriculture. The event invites visitors of all ages to spend time on farms that are actively restoring biodiversity, improving soil and water health, and producing food in ways that benefit both people and the planet.
Organised by Farming For Nature, a non-profit established in 2018 under the Burrenbeo Trust, the event will feature 26 different events across 21 farms in 12 counties, including Tipperary, Wexford, Mayo, Roscommon, Clare, Cork, Kildare, Kilkenny, Galway, Kerry, Laois, and Limerick.
Participating farms will open their gates for guided tours, sharing practical insights into how they’ve integrated biodiversity into their operations — whether through managing woodlands, supporting pollinators, protecting wetlands, or reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
These farms are real-life examples of what farming with nature looks like in practice. Visitors will have the opportunity to:
Meet farmers committed to sustainability
Learn about regenerative practices that improve soil and water quality
See livestock and crops raised in harmony with the land
Discover how nature-based solutions can boost both farm viability and environmental health
Whether you’re from a rural area or an urban centre, the event is open to all — though spaces are limited and registration is required via the Farming For Nature website. The events are free to attend and are offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
Ella McSweeney, RTÉ’s Ear to the Ground presenter and patron of the event, says that the event is a:
“really valuable opportunity for young and old, from all backgrounds across Ireland, to spend time on some of the most nature-rich farms in the country.”
Co-founder of Farming For Nature, Brigid Barry, adds:
“In the past, many people had access to farms through extended family. With the dwindling number of small-hold farms and farmers, that’s not really the case anymore, so this is an opportunity to give urban and indeed rural people access to not just a working farm, but one that approaches food production in a sustainable and nature-friendly way.”
