Cuillalea Wind Farm to Supply Kildare Innovation Campus with Renewable Electricity

The Kildare Innovation Campus, currently undergoing a €2.4 billion redevelopment, has taken a major step toward its goal of becoming Ireland’s only carbon-neutral science, innovation, and technology campus. In a significant move for commercial sustainability, the campus has signed a three-year Corporate Power Purchase Agreement (CPPA) with Flogas, a DCC company, to receive renewable electricity from the Cuillalea Wind Farm in County Mayo.

Renewable Power with Tangible Impact

The CPPA is expected to cut the campus’s carbon emissions by approximately 2,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually. Facilitated by Flogas, the agreement provides a fixed-price, transparent supply of renewable electricity directly linked to a specific renewable producer. This offers budget certainty, insulating the campus from volatile energy prices and strengthening its long-term sustainability strategy.

“This partnership with Flogas and Cuillalea Wind Farm is a game-changer for Kildare Innovation Campus, allowing us to attract environmentally conscious tenants and investors while significantly reducing our carbon footprint, we’ve found the support of our key account manager in Flogas invaluable,” said Allan Shine, CEO of Kildare Innovation Campus. “By choosing local, traceable, renewable wind energy, we are setting a new standard for sustainable commercial development in Ireland.”

Powering Innovation and Research

The energy supplied will power the campus’s state-of-the-art office spaces and advanced research facilities, aligning infrastructure growth with environmental responsibility. The 5.1 MW Cuillalea Wind Farm will play a key role in delivering clean, stable energy to support innovation-led growth.

John Rooney, Managing Director of Flogas Ireland, highlighted the broader impact: “This agreement demonstrates Flogas’ commitment to providing accessible and affordable renewable energy solutions to businesses across Ireland. By combining our strong customer relationship management, our in-depth knowledge of the Irish energy market and strategic relationships with Irish wind-power generators, we are enabling Kildare Innovation Campus to power their operations with clean, sustainable wind energy and achieve their ambitious sustainability goals.”

Ireland’s National Climate Goals and the Role of Green Campuses

Ireland has committed to reaching net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 under its Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act. Achieving this requires not just government policies but meaningful actions from businesses and infrastructure projects.

Initiatives like the Kildare Innovation Campus, powered by traceable, Irish renewable energy, align with national goals by demonstrating that large-scale commercial facilities can operate sustainably. Such projects also contribute to Ireland’s Sectoral Emissions Ceilings, particularly within the energy, enterprise, and built environment sectors.

Beyond Wind: Exploring Future Solutions

This CPPA also builds on a relationship that began in September 2023, when Flogas began supplying gas and electricity to the campus. That relationship has now been extended with a new 12-month gas supply agreement. Flogas also confirmed discussions are underway to explore Solar-as-a-Service (SAAS) solutions and other offerings from its DCC sister companies.

With targeted strategies like these, Kildare Innovation Campus is not only embracing sustainability, it’s actively helping to shape what the future of clean commercial infrastructure can look like in Ireland.

CPPAs: A Key Tool in Accelerating Renewable Energy Adoption

Corporate Power Purchase Agreements (CPPAs) are emerging as a vital mechanism for scaling up renewable energy in Ireland and across Europe. These long-term contracts give developers the financial certainty to build or expand renewable assets like wind farms, while providing buyers with stable, green electricity at predictable prices.

For companies and campuses like Kildare Innovation Campus, CPPAs offer not just energy savings but also a measurable path toward ESG targets and sustainability certifications, such as LEED or BREEAM.

The Growing Role of Innovation Campuses in Climate Leadership

As innovation hubs evolve, they are increasingly expected to lead by example in tackling climate challenges. Science and technology parks, with their concentration of forward-thinking companies and R&D activity, are well-positioned to implement and test clean technologies, from renewable energy and smart grids to circular economy models and low-carbon construction.

Kildare Innovation Campus’s focus on carbon neutrality places it among a growing global network of green innovation districts, helping to shape a new standard for how knowledge-based communities are designed, powered, and operated.

Ireland’s Innovation Campus Goes Green with Wind Energy Partnership: Conclusion

The Corporate Power Purchase Agreement between Kildare Innovation Campus, Flogas, and Cuillalea Wind Farm represents a meaningful step toward Ireland’s green energy transition. By securing a stable, renewable electricity source, the campus reinforces its commitment to sustainability, innovation, and carbon neutrality, setting a benchmark for future developments in Ireland’s commercial and research sectors. As the partnership grows, it exemplifies how strategic collaboration can drive both economic progress and environmental responsibility.
